Why I would have voted against the Obama health bill
Just for the record, had I been in Congress I would have voted AGAINST the bill. The bulk of the debate was divorced from reality (i.e. it is not "a government take-over" nor does it "provide coverage to 30 million" unless by "provide" you mean force people to buy what they will not be able to afford to use. And the 30 million number is just a guess). The bill consisted of a variety of health insurance industry counter-proposals to genuine national health insurance proposals put forward over the past 40 years. McCain would have offered something similar to this, and the Republicans would have voted for it and the Democrats would have opposed it. This vote was nothing but a motion of confidence or non-confidence in the Obama presidency. This was clear from what Kucinich himself stated. He had to vote for what he himself said was a bad bill because he didn't want to be scapegoated for undermining Obama's presidency. He has to do the wrong thing because he feels he needs to remain a Democrat. I am a Green because I want to oppose the wrong thing. If I felt this was even a baby step in the right direction then it might be different. But this is in the wrong direction, just like Obama's war policies and his bailout policies are. There is nothing about the Obama presidency worth protecting. If McCain were president we would have the same pro-war, pro-corporate policies, but at least we could get people into the streets for an anti-war rally and the neo-fascist element that is taking over the tea party movement wouldn't be getting so much press.
