A Green Appeal

Hello everyone,
Once again it is an election year, and once again we face the same problems of war without end, people without health care, a Congress without a backbone, and political leadership without the ability or will to face up to an environmental crisis. Now add to that an economy on the brink of disaster. Two years ago with the support of the Allegheny County Green Party and the people of the 14th Congressional District I managed to get on the ballot and stay on the ballot, providing 17,720 voters the opportunity to express themselves against the war and for a more just society.
It wasn't easy. After submitting more than 6100 signatures, the Democrats made a bogus challenge against our petitions, forcing myself and my volunteers to spend four weeks at the State Capital in Harrisburg proving the signatures to be valid, one at a time. Because the hotel costs would have been prohibitive, we pitched a tent on in a state park and went in day after day to prove our case, becoming the only campaign in the state to overcome a petition challenge.
This year we are back, and having demonstrated our determination, legitimacy, and tenacity in 2006 I would hope that the Democrats will not try the same trick again. This will allow us to devote our time and resources to bringing our Green message to the people of Allegheny County. The 2008 election is shaping up to be a rematch of my one-on-one contest against incumbent Mike Doyle. Although the press will again try to blur the distinctions between us, the differences are quite stark. It is the difference between bringing ALL the troops home promptly and leaving tens of thousands in and around Iraq to be ready for the next war. It is the difference between single-payer national health care and simply forcing people to purchase insurance from private companies just as we are required to do for auto insurance. It is the difference between not being afraid to be the only one standing up for the Constitution and remaining silent. It is the difference between promoting renewable energy technologies called for by leading environmental scientists and pushing for policies demanded by energy industry lobbyists. It is the difference between introducing initiatives to handle the subprime crisis based on a career of studying and analyzing international financial markets and simply trusting to administration and the Fed to solve the problem they themselves created.
Moreover, this year we have a ticket running in Allegheny County. Jonah McAllister-Erickson and Liz Hughes will be on the ballot for Pennsylvania General Assembly in the Twenty-first and Twenty-third districts, respectively, pushing the Green agenda on the state level. Any contributions you can spare would be greatly appreciated. You can mail a check to the address below or donate via Paypal on our website at www.votenorth.org. Checks should be made out to Titus North for Congress. While we know we face an uphill battle, the only alternative is to continue sliding downhill. With your support, we will run to win. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Titus North
